Out and about in Witney
The town of Witney was famous from the middle ages for the manufacture of blankets from local wool and cleaned by water from the River Windrush. It is now a thriving Cotswold market town. The square has the famous Buttercross where people from local villages could sell their eggs, butter and local produce. On the roof is a clock dating back to 1683.
Nearby is the 17th century Town Hall and Church Green which is a lovely open space in front of the 13th century St. Mary’s Church with a tower and spire. Nearby is The Henry Box School which takes its name from a benefactor of the 17th century.
Out and about in Witney itself you will find a range of shops, restaurants and coffee shops and good accommodation in the local hotels and bed and breakfasts.
On the way out of town to Charlbury is the quaint street of West End.
In nearby Cogges is the Victoria Manor Farm which is a working agricultural museum and makes getting out and about in Witney an interesting day for all.
