Out and about in Faringdon
Faringdon is an old historic market town set in beautiful countryside. The Old Town Hall was built in the 17th century and was the centre of the town on market days with farmers’ wives selling their wares. This was also the place of the first town jail, which was a small room in one corner with a tiny high window as a peep hole in the door. The town’s first fire engine was housed under the Market Hall and the bell to alert the crew was situated over the ridge of the roof.
Be sure to see the Church of All Saints when out and about in Faringdon, this has been extended, repaired and changed over the centuries and no doubt could tell many stories. The organ consists of 1390 pipes and can be found by the west window. The south door dates from the 13th century and has wonderful scrolled hinges finishing with dragons’ heads.
Out and about in Faringdon should include a visit to the weekly market, King John gave the town a charter in 1216 to hold this weekly event in the Market Place and proudly continues to this day.
