Carterton is a relatively new town in Oxfordshire and is the second largest in West Oxfordshire. The town of Carterton dates back to the 19th century when it was farmland and part of the parish of Black Bourton. Part of the estate was then sold to William Carter, the founder of Carterton.

Carterton grew rapidly during World War II due to the fact that it is close to RAF Brize Norton military airbase. It is still the main employer in the area with the numbers fluctuating constantly and is the main transport base in the country.
